Because June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, the team at Emerald Integrative Therapy Services wanted to take the chance to discuss neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and the effects it has on an individual and their support system.
Introduction
Neurodegenerative diseases impact the body and brain as well as a person’s emotional and relational well-being. Being diagnosed with a disease such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, or another condition can usher in a wave of uncertainty, fear, and sadness. As time goes on, individuals may grieve lost abilities or struggle with identity changes. Feelings of isolation or anxiety are also common, though it can be difficult to find spaces to process these emotions.
Families and caregivers also often experience their own struggles due to the stress, guilt, and grief that can come with caring for a loved one and having to watch them endure physical, emotional, and cognitive changes.
Learning to live with and cope with the symptoms of these diseases or care for someone struggling with a neurodegenerative disease can be a difficult journey but not one that has to be done alone. We at Emerald Integrative Therapy Services aim to support clients and families in navigating these challenges with compassion, insight, and holistic care.

How Counseling Can Help
Therapy can provide much needed support through every stage of a neurodegenerative illness—for both patients and their families. Key benefits of counseling include:
- Emotional processing: Making space for grief, fear, anger, or sadness in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.
- Coping tools: Helping individuals and families develop strategies to manage the emotional highs and lows of the disease.
- Caregiver support: Offering validation, burnout prevention, and guidance on setting healthy boundaries.
- Family communication: Navigating difficult conversations and strengthening connections amid changing roles and expectations.
- Meaning-making: Exploring personal legacy, values, and identity beyond the diagnosis.
Supporting the Brain with Neurofeedback
While neurofeedback does not cure neurodegenerative conditions, it can be a powerful tool for managing symptoms like anxiety, sleep disturbances, mood swings, or emotional dysregulation (Feasibility Study of Neurofeedback Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease).

You’re Not Alone
A neurodegenerative diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but we want to assure you that you do not have to walk through this alone. With the right support system in place, it’s possible to find meaning and connection even in the midst of extremely difficult changes. At Emerald Integrative Therapy Services, we are here to walk beside you with empathy and expertise.
